If you have a teenager at home learning to drive or has done so recently, is it time you bought them their own vehicle?
That can be a tricky question for many parents to have to answer.
While they want their teen to have some independence, do they feel safe with them on the roads without them?
So, where do you think you may land when your time comes for your teen to drive?
Always Make Safety the Top Priority
If leaning towards buying a car or truck for your teen, here are few pointers to drive you to make the right choice:
- Safety – Your number one priority should always focus in on safety. You probably worry about your teen more times than not as it is. That said you want them to be as safe as possible when they get behind the wheel. When searching for a vehicle, make sure safety is on your mind. You can use the Internet to review the safety rankings for different makes and models. This takes on added importance if leaning towards a used car or truck. Once online, you can proceed with a vehicle owner lookup of a used auto. That lookup may well give you key facts about a vehicle in question. The more you know about accident history, recalls and so on, the better position you are in. This is to decide if it is right for your teen.
- Price – If money is not a problem for you, then you do not have to fret over the price of a vehicle for your teen. That said money is tight for a fair amount of families. As a result, they do have to find the best deals out there to lessen the risk of getting in over their heads. So, if you are one of these families, take time to sift through the available vehicles on the market. While you do not want to buy a vehicle that is unsafe, you may lean towards getting one without all the extras on it. Also think about whether you will ask your teen to contribute to paying for the vehicle. This can be when you go to buy it or once they have it. Having them contribute with the finances can be a good learning experience. It can also teach responsibility at the end of the day.
- Care – Last, you may well want your teen to invest some time and possibly money in the care of the vehicle moving ahead. Doing things like putting gas in the vehicle, checking tire pressure and more are all simple tasks to do. If your teen is good about taking care of their possessions, then this should not be a big thing to expect of them. Having them let you know when something may be amiss with the vehicle takes some of the pressure off you too.
If you believe now is the time to buy your teen a car or truck, be driven to get the best one out there.
